Celebrating her
Contribution

The full programme includes venue & accessability details, full session details, facilitators bios and more besides.

The Ella Baker School of Organising, in association with Critical Labour Studies convened a one day event to celebrate and explore the contributions of Jane McAlevey  to the theory and practice of trade union organising.

The event took place at the
University of Leeds on Saturday 22 March 2025 from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm

In keeping with our ethos, we will not be treating Jane's work as 'the last word on organising' with people expected to learn her ideas by rote and then apply them mechanically. On the contrary, we think that celebrating Jane's contribution involves critiquing it:

  • what was insightful

  • what helped us conceptualise our thinking

  • what didn't fit our experience or work well in our practice

  • perhaps most importantly, how did it stimulate our thinking and shape our practice of organising, and what did we win as a result?

We honour Jane by treating her ideas as living instruments that grow and develop every time we apply them.
